Wheelchairs and Seating for Postural Deviations

If your mother leans to one side or slumps forward in an ordinary chair, a positioning wheelchair with tilt and side supports can hold her in a comfortable, supported position.

What matters in a chair for postural deviations

  1. A seat that follows her shape

Scoliosis (a sideways curve of the spine), kyphosis (a forward rounding of the upper back) and lordosis (an inward sway of the lower back) all mean the body no longer sits square on a flat seat. Broda's Comfort Tension Seating is made of separate straps, and each one can be tightened or loosened. The seat and back can give where she needs room and stay firm where she needs support.

  2. Tilt that works with gravity

Tilt-in-space rocks the seat and backrest back together, so the bend at her hips and knees stays the same. A modest tilt lets gravity settle her into the chair instead of letting her fold forward or drift sideways, and Broda's design does this without restraints. Because the tilt pivots from the front, her eyes stay level with the room and she can still see faces at the table.

  3. Supports you can move later

Curves and contractures (joints that have tightened and no longer fully straighten) can change over months and years. A frame that accepts pads at the sides of the trunk, a shaped back and a head support gives a therapist something to work with. On Broda chairs, many of these accessories mount and adjust without tools, so small changes can happen at a routine visit instead of waiting on a new chair.

Getting the fit right

Ask for a seating assessment with her physical therapist or occupational therapist, or with an ATP (a certified Assistive Technology Professional). They will look at how her pelvis sits, which way her trunk curves, and how far her hips and knees can bend. The seat and back measurements come from those findings. Before the visit, take a few photos of how she sits late in the afternoon, since posture often sags as the day wears on. Plan a recheck whenever the curve or her weight changes.

  1. Call or send a quote request. Tell us the person's height, weight and diagnosis, and where the chair will be used.
  2. Confirm the model with their therapist or ATP. We send a written quote that lists the exact model, size and options.
  3. We order direct from Broda. The chair ships to any US address. In Arizona, our own crew can deliver it, set it up and fit it.

Paying for the chair

Many families pay privately. Insurance or a public program may help when a doctor, therapist or ATP documents why the person needs the chair. Whether it is covered depends on the plan. Our written quote lists the exact model and options, so it can go straight into that paperwork. Facilities, care organizations and multi-unit buyers can ask us about partner pricing.

Questions families ask about Postural deviations

Can a wheelchair straighten scoliosis?

No. A positioning wheelchair supports the body in the shape it has today; it does not change the spine. What a good fit can do is make sitting steadier and more comfortable for her, and that can make meals, visits and daily care easier for everyone involved.

Which wheelchair helps someone who leans to one side?

There is no single answer, because the reason for the lean matters. A therapist will check whether it starts at the pelvis, in the trunk or from weakness on one side. A chair with tilt and removable lateral supports, such as the Broda Centric, is a common place to start, and the setup is refined from there.

Will a custom back or cushion fit a Broda chair?

Many Broda frames accept seating and positioning accessories, and the Comfort Rehab is built to take a variety of seats and backs. Whether a particular part fits depends on the model and the exact item your clinician has chosen. Include those parts in your quote request so the fit can be confirmed before anything is ordered.
