Wheelchairs and Seating for Multiple Sclerosis

Because MS changes over time, many people need a stable, cool seat that adjusts as they do, and often a manual chair to back up a power chair.

What matters in a chair for multiple sclerosis

  1. Energy that comes and goes

MS fatigue can rise and fall through the day. Broda's pedal chairs let your wife move herself with her feet or hands when she has the energy, and the Latitude adds a gentle rocking motion. When she tires, the seat tilts back so she can rest without moving to a bed or recliner.

  2. A firm seat for balance

Air cushions and deep foam feel soft at first, but they can let a person with weak trunk balance sway or sink. Broda's Comfort Tension Seating is made of individual straps that shape to the body while staying firm underneath. Broda designs it to give your husband support he can feel, without the wobble of a plush cushion.

  3. Staying cool

Many people with MS are sensitive to heat, and a thick solid cushion holds warmth against the body. Broda designs its strap seating to let air move through, and offers a Slim Posture Padding package with thin, breathable positioning pads. In a hot Arizona summer, or any warm house, a seat that breathes can make long hours in the chair more comfortable.

Getting the fit right

MS differs so much between people that a seating assessment is worth the time before you buy. A physical or occupational therapist can do it, or an ATP, a specialist in wheelchairs and seating. Ask them to check trunk balance, which side is weaker and how far your loved one can reach. Measure seat-to-floor height if your loved one plans to move the chair with their feet. After a relapse, or any shift in strength, balance or spasticity (muscle stiffness), ask for the fit to be checked again.

  1. Call or send a quote request. Tell us the person's height, weight and diagnosis, and where the chair will be used.
  2. Confirm the model with their therapist or ATP. We send a written quote that lists the exact model, size and options.
  3. We order direct from Broda. The chair ships to any US address. In Arizona, our own crew can deliver it, set it up and fit it.

Paying for the chair

Many families pay privately. Insurance or a public program may help when a doctor, therapist or ATP documents why the person needs the chair. Whether it is covered depends on the plan. Our written quote lists the exact model and options, so it can go straight into that paperwork. Facilities, care organizations and multi-unit buyers can ask us about partner pricing.

Questions families ask about MS

Should someone with MS have a manual wheelchair as a backup?

Many people with MS keep one. Power chairs need regular service, and a repair can leave your loved one without a chair for days or weeks. A Broda manual chair needs little upkeep and gives them a supported seat with tilt in the meantime.

Can a person with MS use a wheelchair they pedal with their feet?

Yes, if they still have some leg strength. Broda sets its pedal chairs low, so the feet can rest flat on the floor, and Broda designs the front-pivot tilt to keep them down even when the seat tips back. A therapist can tell you whether foot propulsion suits your loved one.

Will one wheelchair work through every stage of MS?

Probably not, since MS can change a lot over the years. Broda's chairs adjust widely, but a pedal chair and a full tilt-and-recline chair serve different stages. Plan for an occasional reassessment, or phone ADL on 480.636.1816 to compare models for your loved one today.
