What matters in a chair for heart disease

  1. Every move costs energy

Heart conditions often leave a person tired and short of breath after small efforts. Getting up from a low seat can take more out of your husband than it looks. A seat set level with the bed, along with supports that move aside, cuts down on standing and turning. Some chairs also let a caregiver bring him over from the bed while he stays lying back.

  2. Changing position through the day

Some people prefer to sit fairly upright, while others like to lean back for a while after effort. His care team can say which positions suit him. A chair with both tilt and recline lets you change his angle in small steps at any time of day, without moving him out of the chair.

  3. Support for swollen legs

Swelling in the feet and ankles comes with some heart conditions. Leg rests that lift and support the legs can make long sitting more comfortable, and his doctor can say how high and for how long. Ask which leg rest options come with the model you choose. Broda's Centric includes adjustable leg rests that lift.

Getting the fit right

Bring his cardiologist in early. A referral to an occupational therapist, or to a certified seating specialist known as an ATP, gets the measuring done properly. Share any limits on activity or leg position. They can set seat height so his feet rest flat or his legs are supported, and see how he does at different seat angles. If he uses oxygen, mention it so a tank holder can be added. Ask for a recheck after a hospital stay or any change that affects swelling or weight.

  1. Call or send a quote request. Tell us the person's height, weight and diagnosis, and where the chair will be used.
  2. Confirm the model with their therapist or ATP. We send a written quote that lists the exact model, size and options.
  3. We order direct from Broda. The chair ships to any US address. In Arizona, our own crew can deliver it, set it up and fit it.

Paying for the chair

Many families pay privately. Insurance or a public program may help when a doctor, therapist or ATP documents why the person needs the chair. Whether it is covered depends on the plan. Our written quote lists the exact model and options, so it can go straight into that paperwork. Facilities, care organizations and multi-unit buyers can ask us about partner pricing.

Questions families ask about heart disease

Should someone with heart failure sit upright or reclined in a wheelchair?

That is a question for his cardiologist, since the right position depends on his heart, lungs and swelling. What the chair can offer is choice. A tilt and recline chair lets you adjust his angle in small steps, so you can follow whatever position his care team recommends.

What wheelchair accessories are useful for someone with heart disease?

Useful add-ons from Broda include an oxygen tank holder and a tray for meals and medicines. Leg rests that lift come on some models, such as the Centric. Before ordering, check with ADL that each accessory works with the chair you pick, so everything he needs is in place on day one.

Does someone with heart disease need a bariatric wheelchair?

Only if his weight or body width calls for it. Most Broda positioning chairs are rated to 350 pounds. Above that, or if he needs a seat wider than 24 inches, the bariatric Vanguard is rated to 600 pounds and offers seats as wide as 30 inches. A therapist will measure hip width and confirm weight before you choose.
