Glider Chairs and Seating for Autism

Some autistic children and adults seek out rocking. Broda's gliders give that motion a sturdy, contained home, with locks that hold the seat still for sitting and standing.

What matters in a chair for autism

  1. Motion that stays predictable

Many autistic kids are more at ease when things happen the same way each time. A Broda glider moves along the same smooth arc on every swing, and your son controls the pace. Broda's Comfort Tension Seating shapes around his body, and soft foam padding lines the frame, so the chair feels supportive under him. A steady motion he can start and stop himself gives him some say in how he settles.

  2. Steady when getting up

A moving seat can be unsteady at the exact moment someone sits or stands, and some children get up without warning. The adult Tranquille locks itself as a person sits down or rises, so the seat stays put during those moments. The child-size Aspire has a lock an adult sets, useful while your son is still learning to wait for the chair to stop.

  3. Built for hard days

On rough days a chair may get kicked, scratched or pushed. Broda makes each glider frame from 16-gauge steel with a powder-coated finish and gives that frame a 10-year warranty. The cushions are fluid-resistant, so spills and accidents wipe away. Rear wheels let an adult roll the empty chair aside when a room needs clearing quickly.

Getting the fit right

An occupational therapist who knows your son's sensory profile is the right person to judge whether a glider suits him. They can watch a trial, note whether the motion settles or excites him, and suggest when the lock should be on. Measure hip width, thigh length and floor-to-knee height while he sits. Recheck the fit at least once a year, and sooner if he grows quickly or starts using the chair in a new setting.

  1. Call or send a quote request. Tell us the person's height, weight and diagnosis, and where the chair will be used.
  2. Confirm the model with their therapist or ATP. We send a written quote that lists the exact model, size and options.
  3. We order direct from Broda. The chair ships to any US address. In Arizona, our own crew can deliver it, set it up and fit it.

Paying for the chair

Many families pay privately. Insurance or a public program may help when a doctor, therapist or ATP documents why the person needs the chair. Whether it is covered depends on the plan. Our written quote lists the exact model and options, so it can go straight into that paperwork. Facilities, care organizations and multi-unit buyers can ask us about partner pricing.

Questions families ask about autism

Are glider chairs good for autistic children?

Some autistic children like rocking or swaying, and a glider gives that motion a steady, contained place. Whether it suits your child depends on their sensory needs, which an occupational therapist can assess. It is a chair, and it works alongside whatever supports your child already has.

Can an autistic adult use a glider chair?

Yes. Broda's Tranquille is the adult model, with 18 or 20 inch seats, a 26 or 32 inch back height and a 250 lb rating. It locks by itself as someone sits or stands, which adds steadiness when a grown man or woman gets up in a hurry.

Where should a glider chair go in the house?

Pick a spot with clear floor space around the base, away from loud appliances and busy doorways. A quiet corner of the living room or bedroom often works. Rear wheels let an adult move the empty chair when a different spot turns out better, and the lock keeps it still while you try a new place.
