For Huntington's, families usually look for a sturdy steel tilt-and-recline chair with protective padding that holds steady through constant movement and still lets the person rest.

What matters in a chair for Huntington's disease

  1. Padding for involuntary movement

Chorea, the sudden jerking or twisting movements of Huntington's, can bang a person's arms and legs against the chair many times a day. Broda's Huntington's Special Padding (HSP) package adds thick cushioning around the head, arms and legs. For your mother or husband, that means soft surfaces in the places where a bare frame would otherwise be.

  2. A frame that stays planted

Someone with Huntington's may push, kick or lean hard into the chair all day, and lightweight chairs can loosen or shift under that strain. Broda builds its frames from powder-coated tubular steel and gives them a 10-year frame warranty. Broda designs these chairs to stay stable and upright when your father moves suddenly or throws his weight to one side.

  3. Transfers, rest and cleanup

As Huntington's advances, moving your loved one into and out of the seat usually takes more help. Broda's arm and leg supports swing to the side, leaving open space for a caregiver to work. Tilt-in-space, meaning the whole seat tips back as one unit, is designed to let your loved one settle back and rest without restraints. The cushions resist fluids, so spills and accidents wipe off.

Getting the fit right

Ask an occupational therapist, physical therapist or ATP (assistive technology professional, a specialist in matching people to seating) to see your loved one in the chair during a restless part of the day. Measure hip width, thigh length and the height from seat to shoulder. Note where arms and legs tend to strike, since that shows where padding matters most. Movement, weight and strength can all change with Huntington's, so book a fresh look at the fit every few months.

  1. Call or send a quote request. Tell us the person's height, weight and diagnosis, and where the chair will be used.
  2. Confirm the model with their therapist or ATP. We send a written quote that lists the exact model, size and options.
  3. We order direct from Broda. The chair ships to any US address. In Arizona, our own crew can deliver it, set it up and fit it.

Paying for the chair

Many families pay privately. Insurance or a public program may help when a doctor, therapist or ATP documents why the person needs the chair. Whether it is covered depends on the plan. Our written quote lists the exact model and options, so it can go straight into that paperwork. Facilities, care organizations and multi-unit buyers can ask us about partner pricing.

Questions families ask about Huntington's

What kind of wheelchair is best for Huntington's disease?

No single chair fits everyone, but most families look at a tilt-and-recline positioning chair with extra protective padding. Broda makes two: the Synthesis and the Elite, each offered with Huntington's Special Padding. A therapist or ATP can help you pick the seat size and settings for your loved one.

Will a wheelchair hold up to Huntington's chorea?

Some chairs wear out fast under constant movement. Broda builds its frames from steel tubing meant for heavy daily use, with a 10-year warranty on the frame and 2 years on parts. Still, check bolts, straps and padding every week or so, and call ADL at 480.636.1816 if anything works loose.

Does a tilt wheelchair count as a restraint in a care home?

Broda designs its tilt chairs to position a person comfortably without belts or other restraints. Whether a tilted chair counts as a restraint can depend on how it is used, for example if it keeps someone who wants to get up from doing so. Rules vary by facility and state, so a care home should check its own policy.

This guide is general product information, not medical advice. Chair features are described as Broda designs them. Choose seating together with the person's doctor, therapist or ATP.
